Volunteers support missionary couple

A missionary couple were moving to their first home. They have always lived in rented accommodation so have never had experience of doing any DIY or Decorating.

They both work for the missionary organisation and have to secure their own financial support so there is no spare money to employ tradesmen. Their new home needed some decoration doing to enable them to move in, but they only had a window of one week to get the work done. An additional challenge for them is that one of their children is autistic and childcare is hard, so one of them had to be around to support him. Two volunteers, worked with the mum for two full days and showed her how to decorate, tackling one room that needed stripping and repainting, and the other that just needed wall paper repairing and repainting. Whilst there, the toilet wasn’t working properly and one of the volunteers (who has plumbing experience) was able to do a quick repair and get it working (an essential requirement for a young family!). It was a really rewarding experience as the mum was so excited about her new skillset and expressed to the volunteers that she now felt confident to tackle the other rooms when they needed doing. They moved in, on time, and are settling into their new home.

Shopping to a toilet seat repair

A gentleman with autism is known to a local church and supported with tasks such as shopping. However, he was upset because his toilet seat had broken

due to his autism, it was particularly important for him to keep this particular toilet seat. The church member referred him to the Here2Help Service and we were able to send out a skilled volunteer member and a volunteer helper who identified the issue, purchased some new fittings, and mended the seat. Whilst there, the gentleman also explained that he was unable to go out on his own because he was scared of people confronting him about not wearing a mask (he suffers panic attacks). The volunteers were able to advise him about exemption and organised the purchase of a lanyard for him to wear. He also showed the volunteers the poor condition of his settee and the volunteers were able to offer him a good quality second-hand settee to replace it.

The visit took half an hour and the volunteers were able to help this gentleman with three issues that were impacting on his life.

Our Mission

  • That people in need will be shown the love of Christ through acts of kindness and practical support.
  • To identify people who are living with either poverty or illness who require practical support.
  • To partner with Churches to attract skilled Christian volunteers who wish to share their faith, practically, by providing support to people who need help.
  • To match those who require support with skilled individuals who are able to meet the specific need and, where possible, assist them to help themselves.
  • To provide opportunities for unskilled volunteers to be supervised and learn skills which can be transferrable into employment.
  • To share the love of Christ through the provision of high-quality work, delivered with integrity and honesty
  • To mobilise groups of volunteers to get involved in community action, like litter picking or meeting the practical needs of a specific community group.

Our Values

  • Communication – we will be clear in our dealings with beneficiaries
  • High quality work – we will always use skilled volunteers
  • Reliability – we will do what we promise wherever possible
  • Integrity – all our volunteers will work with integrity to high ethical standards and “do the right thing” at all times
  • Safe practice – all work will be risk assessed and delivered to a high standard
  • Trustworthy – all our volunteer members will be DBS checked, reference checked and work with honesty
